Super Bowl Champion Ben Utecht writes a love letter to his wife and girls from the perspective of the aging football player who may not remember their names and faces one day due to brain disease from concussions.
The study found while there’s little evidence of cognitive impairment in the former athletes, there were “marked differences” between former players and the control group with the number of people with psychiatric disorders. Some of those differences could be due to the number of concussions NHL players experience, researchers suggest.
“Reliable group differences in cognitive performance were observed on tests of executive and intellectual function; performance on these measures was associated with concussion exposure,” the study reads.
Players who experienced more concussions scored lower on intellectual function tests than members of the control group.
“As long as the athletes believe (the tracking) is beneficial and there’s a trust relationship between the coaches and the athletes, then (players) will buy in,” said CoachMePlus president and co-founder Kevin Dawidowicz, who counts 11 NHL teams among his company’s clients. “The Penguins are actually a very successful organization at doing this. … They’re one of the more advanced teams.”
“There’s lots out there if you want to wrap your head around it,” Crosby said. “You don’t go by everything, but there’s certain pieces of information you can use. It’s not always the information you get. It’s how you interpret that information.”
The NHL has acknowledged it isn’t excited about the prospects of marketing the sport in South Korea, but it is very interested in being part of the 2022 Olympics in China.
Fasel suggested that might not be an option.
“If they don’t go to Korea, it will be very difficult for them to go to Beijing,” Fasel said. “The IOC will be in a different position and it would be a totally different deal on the table for the NHL. The NHL has more to lose than to win if they don’t come to Pyeongchang. If they don’t come, they will isolate themselves. The fans will not be happy and the players won’t be happy and then I would say, ‘Good luck with negotiations to go to China.’”
